As we prepare of the 4th of July festivities, many of us are looking forward to barbecues, food, family and fireworks. While it may seem like a good idea to include your pet in the festivities, the big booms and crackles of fireworks can send even the mellowest of pets into a panic. According to the ASPCA, over 10 million pets go missing every year on the 4th of July. The biggest days for runaway pets are those with fireworks, and July 5th is the busiest day of the year for shelters due to the sheer number of lost pets.
Don’t let your pet become a statistic! Here’s what to do:
1) Keep pets indoors
Keep your pets inside, even if you’re not near officially planned fireworks. Your neighbor’s amateur fireworks are really scary for pets.
2) Create a safe space
Dogs especially like small, contained spaces. Fill a crate or other “safe” area with your dog’s favorite toys, blankets and other familiar items.
Thundershirts are tighter, anxiety-specific sweater wraps that swaddle nervous pets, keeping anxious dogs cozy and contained. Thundershirts come in a variety of sizes, so if you’re ordering online be sure to check the sizing instructions. Or, come into the store and try them on.
3) Be smart about CBD’s and supplements
The FDA does not allow medical claims about hemp products. But pet owners are doing their own research, and increasingly come to us to buy hemp oils for their dogs and cats. Pet Food Express sells a variety of hemp products for both dogs and cats. For 4th of July, we recommend the trial size from Blossom Hemp Products. Pet-specific CBD products are derived from hemp, not marijuana. NEVER give marijuana products to pets.
Not looking for CBD? JustFoodforDogs’ Calm supplement is a balanced fusion of Valerian Root and Passion Flower. The blend of these herbs is all-natural and helps to calm your pup’s nervous system which helps reduce all around stress.
4) Distract them
Dogs and cats are naturally curious. The more novel, interesting things your pet has to do, the less they will notice loud noises and a house full of guests. If you’re around to supervise, we recommend No-Hide brand products and long-lasting chews. If not, treat balls and interactive toys are your best friend.
We hope you have a great holiday! Most of our stores will be closed, but a select number are open from 9am-4pm.
