Kitten Season is here and it’s the busiest time of year for shelters and rescues across the country. While it may sound like a beautiful time of year where kittens grow on trees, it can be overwhelming for the shelters and rescues who need to take them in.
What is Kitten Season?
Kitten Season happens every spring as the weather gets warmer and the days get longer. Like most animals, cats most often give birth in the spring. Unlike most animals, cats can have multiple litters back to back and their gestational period is only 60 days. This makes the spring a busy time for cats and in turn the people who need to take care of them.
During Kitten Season, shelters and rescues are often overflowing with kittens, which can be a hardship on the limited staff they have. Young kittens need to be bottle fed every two hours, which is nearly impossible in a busy shelter. This time of year rescues and shelters are always looking for extra hands.
How can I help?
Pet Food Express works with 260+ rescue and shelter partners across California, and many of them share one major thing in common: they need foster homes!
Fostering is an invaluable part of the rescue process. Every pet in a foster home means that two lives are saved: the pet in the foster home and the pet who takes their place in the shelter. And, especially for pets who have certain medical needs, who have been abused, or who just need a little extra love and attention, a foster family can mean the difference between going on to a happy life-long home through adoption or being euthanized as unadoptable. In most cases, fostering doesn't cost the foster home anything other than time and attention; the rescue partners pay for supplies and medical care, and just ask that you open your heart and your home to these lovable pets in need.
Once you sign up here [hyperlink to rescue reserves sign up], your information will be made available to our rescue and shelter partners through the Rescue Reserves program. Specific foster home needs vary by organization, time of year, and other circumstances, so our partners will be able to search the database and contact you when they need foster homes in your area and with your availability. There's never a commitment - if you are no longer available or it's just a bad time, you can let the rescue partner know! You can then stay on the list for a future placement, or you can unsubscribe at any time.
If fostering isn’t for you, there are other ways you can help out. Donations are always needed this time of year and we’re offering 20% off anything you buy as a donation this Kitten Season at Pet Food Express.
What if I find a litter of kittens?
With the rapid birthrate of kittens in the spring, you might find a litter of kittens in your neighborhood or on the street. There are a few important things to remember if this happens.
Usually if you see a litter, the mother is not far away. Please do not touch the kittens. Kittens have the best chance of survival with their mother so it’s important not to disturb them. If you don’t see the mother, wait a little while, she may be looking for food and will return later.
If the mother does not return and you find yourself with a litter of kittens, head to your nearest Pet Food Express and we can help you out.
I would like to adopt a kitten
This is the perfect time to adopt a kitten! Shelters and rescues are overflowing with kittens this time of year. We will be having adoption events at our stores or you can reach out to the rescues and shelters directly.
